What is a PGY1 Residency?
A postgraduate year one (PGY1) community-based pharmacy residency training program is an organized program that builds upon knowledge, skills, attitudes and abilities gained from an accredited professional pharmacy degree program. The first-year residency program enhances general competencies in managing medication-use systems and supports optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients with a broad range of disease states.
Purpose
The purpose of the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program: To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications.
Description
At the University of Florida, our goal is to develop clinical practitioners who provide advanced patient care services and advance pharmacy practice in a community pharmacy setting. The program is intentionally and specifically designed to enhance the resident’s knowledge, skills, confidence, and abilities by incorporating our four pharmacy foundations: 1) Community Pharmacy Practice Advocate, 2) Ambulatory Patient Care Expert, 3) Clinical Pharmacy Educator and 4) Innovative Leader.
The PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of Florida will prepare a pharmacy resident to become a leader as an innovative clinical practitioner. Our program will assist the pharmacy resident to develop leadership abilities, strengthen confidence and skills and offer an experience to advance patient care services within a community pharmacy practice.
Our residency program contributes to helping people across our community live healthier and happier lives by instilling the core values of care, dedication, innovation, trust and partnership between patients, student pharmacists, pharmacy residents and the residency program directors. After successful completion of the program, the residency graduate will be prepared to step into a pharmacy management or a clinical pharmacist position.
