Protein Binding: Static Solutions to a Dynamic Problem May Mislead Drug Development and Regulation

Cameron Humerickhouse

Cameron Humerickhouse is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in the department of Pharmaceutics, under the mentorship of Dr. Stephan Schmidt at the Center for Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology in Lake Nona. He graduated with his B.S. degree in Pre-clinical Health Sciences from the University of Central Florida in 2014, then went on to earn his M.S. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2017 and Pharm.D. in 2022 from the University of Florida. Cameron’s research interests focus on applications of physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling and simulation in special patient populations, such as pregnancy/lactation, and quantitative systems pharmacology modeling to characterize the dynamic interplay between drug and pathophysiology.

Ryanne Mulligan

Ryanne Mulligan is a second-year Ph.D. student in the department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research under the mentorship of Dr. Jatinder Lamba. She graduated with her undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Cell Science with a minor in Bioinformatics from the University of Florida in 2024. Her dissertation work focuses on performing a global proteomics analysis on pediatric acute myeloid leukemia patient samples to uncover survival-associated proteins that may act as novel biomarkers or drug targets.

Mohammad Yaseliani is a third-year Ph.D. student in the department of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and policy under the mentorship of Dr. Md Mahmudul Hasan. He graduated with his undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran. He graduated with his master’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, Iran. His primary focus is on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in health informatics.

Sulafa Al Sahlawi

Sulafa Al Sahlawi is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in the department of Pharmaceutics under the mentorship of Dr. Rodrigo Cristofoletti. She holds a Pharm.D. from King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia, and an M.Sc. in Experimental Pharmacology and Therapeutics from University College London (UCL), UK. Her dissertation research focuses on leveraging physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling to predict drug exposure and evaluate drug–drug interaction risks in special populations.

Satyavardhan Rao Nittu is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in the department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research under the mentorship of Dr. Jatinder Lamba. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from Osmania University, India. His dissertation research focuses on ideveloping polygenic risk scores to predict chemotherapy-induced toxicities in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML), with the goal of improving risk stratification and advancing precision medicine approaches in pediatric oncology.

Priscila Yamamoto

Priscila Yamamoto is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in the department of Pharmaceutics under the mentorship of Dr. Natalia de Moraes. She holds a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of São Paulo (USP), an M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from São Paulo State University (UNESP), and a B.S. in Pharmacy Biochemistry from UNESP. Her research integrates pharmacometrics, clinical pharmacology, and toxicology to optimize drug therapy in specific populations, with expertise in population and physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling.

Her research focuses on utilizing a 3D skeletal muscle microphysiological system to study Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy type R1/2A .

Jean Malave

Dr. Malave joined the department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research as a Ph.D. student in 2023 under the mentorship of Dr. Larisa Cavallari after earning his Pharm.D. from the University of Florida. His research focuses on evaluating the impact of clinical, genetic, and social determinants on P2Y12 inhibitor response following percutaneous coronary intervention. Dr. Malave’s long-term goal is to identify actionable factors to guide personalized P2Y12 inhibitor prescribing and to identify patient populations that may benefit most from pharmacogenetic testing.

Nadine Alshakhshir is a fifth-year Ph.D. student in the department of Cellular and Systems Pharmacology, mentored by Dr. Charles J. Frazier. Her research investigates calcium dynamics in the dendrites of magnocellular oxytocin neurons as a proxy for oxytocin release, with the goal of advancing our understanding of how oxytocin is released in the brain.

Yujia Jiang

Yujia Jiang is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in the department of Medicinal Chemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Yousong Ding. She earned her master’s degree from Southern University of Science and Technology. Her research focuses on natural product biosynthesis and enzymology around MAA biosynthesis. Her work seeks to define biosynthetic pathway architecture, including pathway branching and complementary routes, to better understand metabolite instability, product diversification, and opportunities for pathway engineering.

Hsin-Ying Tsai

Hsin-Ying Tsai is a third-year Ph.D. student in the department of Medicinal Chemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Yousong Ding. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Her research focuses on the computational analysis of biosynthetic gene clusters in natural products, with an emphasis on predicting stereochemistry and module order in polyketide synthases. Her work integrates genome mining and machine learning approaches to predict natural product chemical structures, with the aim of advancing the rational engineering and discovery of bioactive natural products.

Mona Alshahawey

Dr. Mona Alshahawey, M.Sc., Ph.D., BCPS, is a postdoctoral associate in the department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research at the College of Pharmacy under the mentorship of Dr. Caitrin McDonough. Her work focuses on computational phenotyping of cardiovascular diseases, genetic association studies, opioid pharmacogenetics, GWAS, and machine-learning applications in real-world clinical data. She is dedicated to advancing precision medicine and equitable healthcare through data-driven approaches. With over eight years of experience, her work spans clinical trials, pharmacogenetics, patient-centered outcomes, Pharmacoeconomics and comparative effectiveness research.

Identification and Characterization of Chemoimmunomodulatory Induction Trajectories in Breast Cancer

Iasmim Lima

Dr. Iasmim Lima is a postdoctoral associate in the department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research under the mentorship of Dr. Mohammed Gbadamosi. She earned her Ph.D. in Materials and Nanotechnology Engineering, with a concentration in Applied Chemistry, from Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Lima has interdisciplinary expertise in mass spectrometry–based omics technologies for biomarker discovery and the study of biological programs in cancer and infectious diseases. Her current research integrates patient-derived 3D models, single-cell RNA sequencing, and machine learning approaches to identify and characterize the molecular features underlying chemoimmunomodulation in triple-negative breast cancer.

Rongting Yue

Dr. Rongting Yue is a postdoctoral associate in the department of Medicinal Chemistry under the mentorship of Dr. Yanjun Li. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Connecticut, where his research focused on control theory. His current work centers on AI-driven drug discovery, with an emphasis on developing conditional diffusion models for the de novo design of small molecules with improved binding affinity to target proteins.
