Kaitlin Alexander, Pharm.D., BCCCP, and Bethany Shoulders, Pharm.D., two clinical associate professors in the Department of Pharmacy Education and Practice in the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, have both been named as fellows of the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
This accolade is presented by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, or SCCM, and honors members who showcase clinical excellence and achievement in program development, scholarly activities related to critical care and regional or national engagement. The pair will be recognized during the 2026 Critical Care Congress on March 23 in Chicago. For Shoulders, this is an immense honor because many of her academic mentors have also earned this fellow status.
“SCCM has been my professional home since I began my career as a critical care clinician in 2015,” Shoulders said. “I owe my development as a critical care practitioner to the committed members of SCCM, and I eagerly anticipate continuing my involvement with this dynamic and essential organization for many more years.”
Criteria for this fellowship includes several items, which most notably include having a certificate of special competence in critical care, having devoted 50% of time to critical care in practice, research, administration or teaching for at least two years, and having made significant contributions to the perception, delivery or management of critically ill patients in the three areas of program development, scholarly contributions and leadership. Alexander says this honor opens the door for her professionally to new collaboration, mentorship and advocacy opportunities within the critical care community.
“It strengthens my commitment to advancing the field and supporting the next generation of critical care professionals,” Alexander said. “Personally, it’s incredibly rewarding to see a long-standing goal realized and to be recognized among such a distinguished group of peers.”
