Global Gators Symposium bridges science and collaboration across continents

Pharmacy Gators from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, along with alumni and professionals residing in Europe, gathered in Bilbao, on Spain’s northern coast, for the 14th Global Gators Symposium. The biennial event was held June 7-8 and focused on the latest advances in clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacology while celebrating the enduring connections and collaborations forged at UF.

The Global Gators Symposium featured a scientific day at the Euskalduna Conference Center in Bilbao and a networking day in La Rioja. The symposium included more than 15 presentations focused on topics related to model-informed drug development, real-world evidence and clinical research, with several current UF College of Pharmacy faculty leading sessions.

As part of the festivities, the Global Gators Award was presented to Wolfgang Kircher, Ph.D., a long-time supporter of the Global Gators Symposium. The award is given to an individual who best represents the UF Gator spirit internationally in the field of clinical pharmacy and clinical pharmacology. Kircher co-hosted the 9th symposium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in 2013 and has supported UF’s pharmacy exchange student program with Germany. He has been active in the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists and has served as a bridge to international collaboration.

The Global Gators Symposium was established by the late Hartmut Derendorf, Ph.D., a distinguished professor who served over 30 years on the UF College of Pharmacy faculty. After his passing in 2020, Stephan Schmidt, Ph.D., the Certara Endowed Professor and director of the Center for Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology in the UF College of Pharmacy, along with Almut Winterstein, R.Ph., Ph.D., a distinguished professor and director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Safety in the UF College of Pharmacy, have organized the event and continued the spirit of Global Gators.

The Global Gators Symposium would like to thank CTI for all their support as a sponsor and the local host, as well as the event sponsors, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sanofi, Gilead and Roche.
