UF College of Pharmacy team finishes in top 5 of AMCP P&T Competition

A team of student pharmacists from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy’s Orlando campus advanced to the final round of the National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics Competition hosted by the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, or AMCP, Foundation. Only five of the 45 pharmacy colleges submitting entries in the national competition were invited to participate in the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Competition Finals on March 22 in San Antonio.

The UF College of Pharmacy team featured third-year student pharmacists Shayan Bassir, Lanz Golez and Ryan Tran. Their journey to the national finals began in January when the Orlando team won the college competition. AMCP’s panel of judges selected the team as a national semi-finalist in February and a national finalist in early March.

The competition required them to write a 30–40-page monograph evaluating the drug ADBRY™ (tralokinumab-ldrm) injection and make recommendations for formulary placement and utilization management strategies. They also made a PowerPoint presentation before AMCP’s judges that conveyed and supported the information and recommendations in the drug monograph.

“Our team is extremely humbled and proud to represent the UF College of Pharmacy on the national stage,” Tran said. “As we have advanced through the local, semifinal and final stages, we have come to realize the clinical impact we can have, the skills that we can build upon, and the influence we can have for a new generation of Gators. We are truly thankful for the friends who have supported us on this journey and the mentors who have entrusted us with their knowledge and guidance.”

The AMCP Foundation National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics Competition is an annual team event designed to provide an immersive experience in the skills necessary for effective formulary review and management. Competition teams work together as if they are preparing for — and presenting to — a mock pharmacy and therapeutics committee.

This year’s contest marked the 23rd time the AMCP Foundation has hosted the National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy & Therapeutics Competition.
