Knowledge

1. Develop fundamental knowledge in genomics and genomic science Satisfactory completion of Advanced Genetics (PCB 5065), or Genomics and Bioinformatics (GMS 6231) or Pharmacogenomics (PHA 6449) or Genetic Epidemiology (PHC6937) or equivalent
2. Develop understanding of genomic medicine, including barriers/challenges associated with implementing genomic medicine into clinical practice (e.g. evidentiary, practical, social, ethical) Satisfactory completion of PHA5933 Clinical Applications of Personalized Medicine and complete at least 80 hours in the clinical genomic medicine setting during the training period
3. Identify key issues in genomic medicine, including   a. Methods for defining genomic discoveries that are clinically actionable and b. Meaningful use of genomic medicine data in the clinical setting Satisfactory completion of Pharmacogenomics (PHA 6449) or Human Genetics I and II (GMS6012, 6015) or Genetic Epidemiology (PHC6937)   or equivalent; Participation in journal club and research seminar series with focus on genetics, genomics, or genomic medicine
4. Describe research design issues in conducting translational research Satisfactory completion of Course GMS6842 (Translational Research Design & Methods); Meetings with members of mentoring team

 

Skills

1. Develop well-founded, important and testable hypotheses related to genomic medicine Write Specific Aims section of research grant & review with mentoring team
2. Develop studies designed to test hypotheses related to genomic medicine Write research protocol and review with mentoring team
3. Acquire skills in data analysis of genomics or transcriptomics data and accurately interpret statistical findings Satisfactory completion of Courses GMS6861 & 6862 (Applied Biostatistics I & II) or GMS6841 (Design and Analysis in Translational Research) or equivalent; Analyze existing genomic dataset(s) & review results with mentoring team; Participate in journal club
4. Acquire research skills needed to test study hypotheses Develop molecular/genomic laboratory skills and use these to generate original data OR Develop sophisticated genomics analysis skills and correctly analyze complex genomics dataset, OR Develop and utilize research skills for testing genomic medicine implementation and outcomes.
5. Acquire skills in writing and critiquing research manuscripts Critique at least one manuscript submitted to mentor for review; Write at least two manuscripts during training period and submit to peer-reviewed journal
6. Acquire skills in writing and critiquing grant applications Satisfactory completion of graduate-level grant writing course (PET5936 or PHC 7227); Participate in mock study section as reviewer; Write at least one grant application and submit for review
7. Acquire skills in oral presentation of research findings Present research findings in at least one UF seminar annually; Present research findings at one (or more) national meetings during the training period
8. Manage the fiscal, personnel, and regulatory aspects of a funded research program Develop a budget for a grant application; Submit at least one IRB or other regulatory document (e.g. for dbGAP submission, IACUC)

1. Value the highest ethical standards in conducting both preclinical and clinical research and understand unique issues in genomic medicine. Satisfactory completion of IRB and/or IACUC training modules; Satisfactory completion of Course GMS 7003 (Responsible Conduct of Biomedical Research) or equivalent, and completion of GMS6221 Ethics in Genetics
2. Appreciate the value of multidisciplinary, collaborative approaches to research related to genomic medicine Assemble interdisciplinary mentoring team;   Attend CTSI seminar series such as K College
3. Recognize the critical importance of collaborative team-based science that includes basic and clinical scientists for advancing translational research, particularly genomic medicine Complete at least 80 hours in the clinical genomic medicine setting during the training period and discuss context relatively their work; build mentoring team that include basic and clinical scientists
